the game, I can draw up the papers and have them ready before it's over." She slapped her briefcase. "And by ten tomorrow you can have your check." Her eyes were nearly popping.
"Beverly, it's an incredible offer but we have to put it on hold. I told you that."
"Terry, hon, you don't put that kind of money on hold."
"I explained to you that Matty's got a medical problem." How she hated putting it into words.
Beverly squinted at the Devil Dogs bench. "He looks perfectly fine to me. I mean, he's playing ball. What's the problem?"
"That's frankly not your business," Terry said. She couldn't believe her tone.
"Look, you're right, I'm sorry. But she's been pushing me like you wouldn't believe."
"I understand, but my son's health comes first. We'll give you a definite answer tomorrow."
"Tomorrow," she echoed.
"But it's entirely possible we may not move for a few months."
"A few months?" Angry disbelief flitted across Beverly's eyes but she nodded it away. "Look, hon, I understand. I'm sorry to hear. I hope he's going to be okay. But you can do both. Sell your house and take a temporary place nearby while Matty gets his treatment. There are plenty of places for rent all around here. Meanwhile, put the money in a CD, and when everything blows over, move someplace else."
Terry glowered at Calvin. "Feel free to contribute," she said.
"Can't we talk about this some other time? It's my kid's game," he said.
"It's just that she's not the kind of woman you put off."
"Maybe not, but we're not living according to her time clock." Then to soften the edge, he added, "We're getting some test results tomorrow. We'll know better then."
"Okay," Beverly said. "Tomorrow." Then, as if she couldn't help herself, she said, "Tonight, if you hear something . . . anytime, forget about waking me. Believe me, you don't want to lose this offer. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing. What can I say?"
